As anyone who follows myself or Kristal Crow on Twitter will know by now, yesterday was Kristal’s birthday. And she hadn’t planned to celebrate it. To her, it was just another day – although she wasn’t ignoring the fact that her age in years would go up by one.
What she hadn’t bargained for was that there were certain people who weren’t going to let the day pass without celebrating her birth. The people in question were her mother and stepfather, myself… and the Twitter community at large.
During the day, Kristal received birthday greetings by the bucketload from around the world, and in numerous languages (English, Welsh, French, Spanish, Elvish and even Klingon, to name just six). Plus, her followers made awesome pictures for her:
But no matter how people in the online community chose to express their good wishes, Kristal was utterly blown away. The events of the past few years have caused Kristal to question her value to society, so for her to receive so much love, from people she’s never even met in person, has been jaw-dropping.
Comments from Kristal, during the course of the day:
“I’ve not seen anyone else get this much attention before!”
“Oh, you guys…” (in an awed voice)
“Who the fuck am I?” (erm, she’s questioning her importance, there – not going senile ;) )
And over and over again, I told her that “we love you”… and we do – not just me.
Thank you for making Kristal’s birthday better than she could possibly have imagined. She and I have said often that the community we’re in is awesome – and what you did for her yesterday is a prime example of that. I’m proud to know such wonderful, giving people – you are all amazing, and I love you dearly. I know Kristal does, too.
